The ECODESIGN PILOT is a practical software tool for identifying and implementing Ecodesign measures of products. In the SInnDesign project the PILOT has been completely redesigned and adapted to textile products. To develop this textile specific version the Vienna University of Technology as the software developer has been supported by the HTL Dornbirn, an Austrian technical high school. The new software is already online and available in English and German language (Spanish, Portuguese and Danish will follow soon) at: http://new.ecodesignpilot.com

PILOT stands for Product Investigation, Learning and Optimization Tool. The PILOT allows finding suitable tasks for the implementation of the strategies into the product improvement process. For the application the ECODESIGN PILOT uses checklists. They serve as working documents and are intended to assist product developers in the product improvement process.

The methodical approach for improving a product with the ECODESIGN PILOT consists of four steps: select type – select strategy – assess measures – find ideas

The PILOT uses the concept of product types, depending in which life cycle stage the most environmental impact occurs. This can be derived from an environmental evaluation like LCA, or simplified tools like the ECODESIGN PILOT`s Assistant (http://www.ecodesign.at/assist). For example a product with the most environmental impacts due to their raw materials is called a raw material intensive product.

Knowing the product type (step 1) the PILOT lists suitable strategies for the product improvement. After choosing the relevant strategies (step 2) for your product, the PILOT asks you some questions on various aspects on their relevancy and their fulfillment in the product (step 3). In the last step (step 4) the PILOT lists highly relevant and not fulfilled measures for idea generation and further planning of realization. For a detailed understanding of each measure a description on the environmental relevance is given. Further industrial product examples, focusing on textile products, on the realization of each measure are given which serves also as analogy and stimulates idea generation. Once an idea is derived it can be documented together with the related costs, the feasibility, and the responsibilities in the checklist and saved as pdf-file.
